Board of Directors blogs focus on how to become a productive board member and how to set the right priorities for governance and best practices. They also address specific issues to employee stock ownership plans (« ESOP »)-owned businesses, as well as other topics relevant to the board of director generally.

Good governance means the board is genuinely engaged in the bigger objectives of the company and is able to operate in the world or market where the company hopes to have an impact. It also means that the board is supported in voicing their concerns when they notice issues and is able to coach. It’s a structure that is able to balance power in a precise way. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work.

A lot of people who serve on boards are bored and unengaged. This could be due to a lack in enthusiasm, the culture of their organization or their own personalities. Some board members aren’t certain of what their role is supposed to be. Others are aware that the board of directors they’re not performing at the highest level.

This article is aimed at the second group, those who have been offered or are currently taking seats on governance boards but have difficulty engaging and productive. This isn’t an attack on Johns and Daves this is an exact reflection of the way to board posts (and other C level roles). The article provides the foundational elements needed to change the game. Diversity of thought is most often gained through the diversity of gender, age, ethnicity, upbringing, context and experience.
